What is Talk Disabilities?

NadiaBashooPhoto

My name is Nadia Bashoo. I was born with no sight at all, and like many people in my position, I have struggled in the past to find work. There is a shockingly low percentage of disabled people in employment, even though many are just as qualified as their able-bodied peers. This fact, as well as my own experience, inspired me to set up Talk Disabilities, a consultancy service offering help and advice to businesses, schools and colleges.

Why Employ Someone with a Disability?

Believe it or not, there are several advantages to employing a disabled person:

  • Longterm Loyalty. Since it is extremely difficult for any disabled person to find work, a business that shows it is willing to employ them and make the necessary adjustments will find a willing, hardworking and loyal employee. This will potentially reduce staff turnover, as well as cutting down on recruitment costs.
  • A more caring working environment. Having a disabled member of staff can be great for your workforce as a whole, as it strengthens the bond between members, making them more conscious of each other and their environment.
  • Enhanced personal reputation. By showing yourself willing and able to employ people with disabilities, you will greatly enhance your reputation in the local community. You will show yourself to be an employer who believes in diversity within the workplace and promotes equal opportunities within the company. This will also place you in a strong position with your competitors.
  • The satisfaction of helping others. By hiring a disabled person, you will be helping them to build a career and live an independent life, and perhaps even afford a home of their own. Disabled people want the same things from life as their able-bodied counterparts. You can make that happen.

How I can help you

By now, I’m sure you have a number of questions. These might include:

  • How will I make my workplace suitable for a disabled person?
  • Will they need all sorts of specialist equipment?
  • What adjustments might I have to make to the environment itself?
  • How will I possibly afford all this?

These are all perfectly reasonable concerns. Fortunately, the answers are much easier than you might expect, and I can help by providing you with the guidance and information you need. Plus, my real-life experiences will help you to change the way you think about people with disabilities.

For Schools and Colleges

Disability education can never start too young, so I also visit schools and colleges. Although, visual impairment is the focus of these sessions, since I can speak with personal experience of this condition, what students learn can be applied to disabilities in general. Through my talks, children and young people are able to ask questions and learn. There is no question I won’t answer.
